If you regularly drive to work or school, you may want to get a credit card that earns rewards on gas and EV charging expenses.

A good gas credit card should earn at least 3% back on all eligible purchases, including EV charging for electric vehicles. The best ones also earn bonus rewards on other expenses such as travel and dining and come with additional travel or purchase protections.

Beyond these simple criteria, choosing the best gas credit card depends on your overall spending habits and whether you want to earn cash back or travel rewards.

Business Insider's personal finance team combed through dozens of potential picks by evaluating welcome bonus offers, ongoing rewards, additional benefits, and annual fees.

Based on our research, these are the best gas credit cards to maximize your spending at the pump.

Best Gas Credit Card for Cash Back Maximizers

The Citi Custom Cash℠ Card earns 5% cash back on gas and EV charging — but only if it's your highest expense that billing cycle, and only on up to $500 per billing cycle (then 1%).

If you max out this $500 monthly cap, you could earn $25 in bonus cash back per cycle, or $300 a year — not bad for a card with $0 annual fee.

This card offers several eligible categories for 5% cash back each billing cycle. In addition to gas, these categories include restaurants, grocery stores, select travel, select transit, select streaming services, drugstores, home improvement stores, fitness clubs, and live entertainment. (It also earns 4% on hotels, rental cars, and attractions booked through Citi Travel.)

Remember, you'll only earn 5% on one of these categories and just 1% back on everything else, so this card earns the most when used exclusively on the expense that costs you closest to $500 a month or for eligible Citi Travel bookings.

Best Gas Credit Card for Costco Shoppers

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is best for Costco loyalists who also fuel up their cars at this wholesale club.

The card earns 5% on gas at Costco, and 4% cash back on non-Costco gas and EV charging expenses worldwide, on up to $7,000 in combined purchases per year (then 1%).

There's no annual fee, but you need an active Costco membership to earn rewards. Cardholders only receive rewards once a year in February, in the form of a certificate you can redeem for cash back or merchandise at Costco.

Cardholders also earn 3% back on restaurant and eligible travel purchases worldwide, 2% back on all other purchases from Costco and costco.com, and 1% back on everything else.

Best Gas Credit Card for Single-Card Households

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card is best for people who want a single credit card for daily expenses. It earns 4 points per dollar on the first $1,000 each quarter spent on gas and EV charging.

Each point is worth 1 cent toward cash back, travel, gift cards, or merchandise, so the U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card effectively earns 4% back at gas stations.

Cardholders also earn 4 points per dollar on most travel; 5 points on prepaid hotels and rental cars booked through the Altitude Rewards Center; 2 points on dining, streaming, and groceries (excluding wholesale clubs); and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

The card comes with generous perks for a $0-annual-fee card including a Global Entry/ application fee credit, a zero-interest period for new cardholders, cellphone protection, four complimentary Priority Pass™ airport lounge visits per year, and several travel protection benefits.

If you're willing to become a member of PenFed (short for Pentagon Federal) Credit Union, you can get the PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature® Card, which earns a whopping 5 points per dollar on gas and EV charging. You don't have to have any military affiliation to join PenFed.

This card also earns an unlimited 3 points per dollar at supermarkets and restaurants, and on TV, radio, cable, and streaming services, plus 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

Its primary drawback is that redeeming rewards isn't straightforward: The value of your points varies depending on what you use them for — travel, gift cards, or merchandise — and there's no option to use points for cash back.

Insider’s Take

The Gemini Credit Card is best for risk-tolerant investors who want to earn bitcoin and other cryptocurrency from everyday expenses like gas, dining, and groceries. This card doesn't charge annual fees or foreign transaction fees, and cardholders can add authorized users at no additional cost.

  • Rewards with the power to grow
  • Invest as you spend
  • Instant crypto rewards
  • No annual fee and no foreign transaction fees
  • You can earn bitcoin, ethereum, or 50+ other cryptos available on Gemini
  • Easily change the crypto you want to earn back, as often as you want

The Gemini Card is ideal for people bullish on investing in cryptocurrency. Cardholders can earn instant rewards in the digital currency of choice from dozens of popular options including bitcoin and ether.

This sleek metal Mastercard earns 4% back on gas and EV charging (up to $200 per month, then 1%), 3% back on dining, 2% on groceries, and 1% on everything else, making it easy to rack up returns from everyday expenses. The card doesn't have an annual fee or charge foreign transaction fees.

But this card recommendation comes with several caveats, including warnings galore on Reddit from current Gemini Card customers.

Crypto is notoriously volatile, so the value of your rewards will be significantly less predictable than straight cash back or even travel rewards. Gemini rewards cannot be used to pay off your credit card statement balance, and cardholders may incur fees when selling or converting their rewards.

Many cardholders also complain that their cards are often declined for various reasons, while others say the Gemini mobile app can be slow to note real-time activity such as new transactions or balance payments. Gemini customer service also gets mixed reviews, with some Redditors calling it "an awful experience" for unresponsive support.

To sum up the Gemini Card experience — and crypto investing overall — in one Reddit cardholder's words: "Use at your own risk."

Specific Credit Cards for Gas vs. General-Use Credit Cards

When shopping for a good credit card for gas purchases, focus on options that earn bonus rewards across a number of household expenses. This allows you to maximize your potential earnings across a diverse range of spending.

The best credit cards for gas and EV charging are general-use cards that earn rewards on several categories of everyday expenses such as groceries, household goods, drugstores, and transit.

We recommend avoiding co-branded credit cards offered by gas companies such as Shell or Chevron since gas comprises a relatively small portion of most budgets. Instead, focus on a card that earns between 2% to 5% back per dollar spent on gas or EV charging at any station.

Discounts on Gas at Costco and Sam's Club

Many credit cards do not earn bonus rewards on purchases made at wholesale centers like Costco and Sam's Club. If you exclusively fuel up at one of these places, make sure you find a credit card that still earns bonus points here. For example, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi earns 5% back on Costco gas and EV charging on the first $7,000 per year.

  • Earning potential — Does the card earn generous rewards on gas, and are there other bonus categories that line up with everyday spending habits?
